Day Seven
Vermont

We are home!

We did not go to Boston. We went directly to our home, a farm in Central Vermont.

We flew to California two weeks ago from Logan airport. Our car is at our number four son and daughter-in-law’s home just a few miles south of the airport.

This morning our third son, our host last night in Harrisburg, convinced us to go directly home  ”You don’t need your car,” he argued, “Boston is not safe. There is a lot of virus there.”

He and his girlfriend work on health care and related issues for state government;  they have a good perspective. We listen to them.

And he is right. We have a truck here. We do not need our car. And we are not going anywhere.

We took our son’s advice and drove north from Harrisburg, through New York state to Vermont. We dodged both New York City and Boston by taking this route.

This means our journey is not quite over however. Tomorrow we will drive the additional 50 miles to Burlington to return the Hertz rental. Hopefully they will not charge us an extra drop off fee.

So far we have driven 3,414 miles from Palm Springs. In the week we have been gone, Palm Springs has had a serious outbreak and a shelter in place order has been issued. We got out of there just in time.

After tomorrow we will self quarantine for a couple of weeks. We have a lot of food put away and spring is coming, though the fields are still snow covered here. When we hunker down, we will start seeds inside and get ready for spring planting. The sheep need to be shorn and lambing is scheduled to begin in early May.

There is always a lot to do on a farm. We will hardly notice the quarantine, though we have grandchildren 900 feet away that we will not be able to hug. That is a serious bummer but a small price to pay for safety.

I will continue to blog here each day offering up my offbeat humor and perspective on these hard times.

Some good news in the Green Mountains!

Vermont Governor Phil Scott today signed an executive order that authorizes the home delivery of booze and beer. No need to leave home to get your drink on. Vermonters will still be able to pound tall-boys while they binge “Game of Thrones” for the fifth time.

Be safe.

  2. I'm sure the most of the trip was stressful, but what an adventure and what a nice story you have told about it. So glad you are both safe and finally home. It is really crazy out there and you have shown us all some of that!
